EDIT: the new LFG interface (3.3.2) makes this question obsolete.

One thing I've noticed levelling various toons up to 80 is that you end up missing most of the instances along the way (eg stocks, gnomer, zf) because it's impossible to get a PUG together.

The LFG interface is a ghost town and most guilds seem to be full of lvl 80 DK's doing raids.

Does anyone have advice for better ways to see this content at roughly the right level? I'm not so interested in having some lvl80 run me through as the point is to enjoy the game, not just tick it off as an achievement.

I've been levelling an alt recently, and found that the /general channels of level appropriate zones have been the best place to start.

There's often enough other people levelling there that some would be interested. Once you've got 3 or more you'll know whether you're still short of tanks, healers or dps, and can start using /who (e.g. /who priest 35-40) to identify people in other zones that might be capable of filling your empty spots.

If you do take to whispering strangers, make sure to be friendly and polite, and don't spam them more than once. Something like "Hello, would you like to join a group to Uldaman? We're in need of a healer" would normally get friendly answers.

You should also post a LFM in the LookingForGroup channel, as many people levelling alts are inveterate LFG-lurkers and may well be interested.

If you're willing to take the initiative and form the group, then it shouldn't take too long if you do the above (unless you're on a very low-population server, or its 5am or something).

Instances while levelling are a great way to populate your friends list, and the bigger the list, the easier it is to get a group the next time.

You covered pretty much everything, but popping a post in trade is also a great way to attract people who may be on their mains/other alts and not in LFG. – Cracked Jar Oct 29 at 12:00

If you can hold out until Patch 3.3, Blizzard is majorly revamping the dungeon/LFG tool as well as allowing cross-realm dungeon groups (ala cross-realm battlegrounds):

Join as a Group or Solo: Much like the current Looking For Group system, players will be able to join the dungeon system and choose the role they would like to fill within groups: Healing, DPS, or Tank. In addition, once roles have been identified, they will be applied to all dungeons chosen. Players will now be able to choose multiple dungeons and will no longer be limited to three. The system has also improved group creation and matchmaking capabilities and will create more balanced groups when assessing the selected roles of players.

The LFG channel has been disconnected from the dungeon tool and can be used by anyone in a major city, much like the trade channel currently available.

I'm very much looking forward to this as I'd like to revisit some of my favorite old dungeons at an appropriate level, which is very hard to find a group for nowadays.

It seems like all concerns about loot, bad members, group composition matching have been addressed and they even throw in a bonus for having random members.
