After many google searches, I find myself wondering.

Is there a way to revert your login screen to either BC or Vanilla WoW? Sindragosa is nice and all, but I miss my dark portal.

While it used to be possible to alter the login screen, and many did For significant performance benefits, changes in patch 3.2 have made this nigh impossible. The methods required to do so now border dangerously close to TOS violating levels of model editing, so I'd really kind of strongly advise against it, as much as Sindragosa annoys us all.

Tbh, it really sucks that Blizzard A) Didn't give users the ability to change their login page and B) Disabled the functionality of that addon. – Clbull Oct 30 at 22:10

The login screen as you have identified is linked to which expansion/patch level you are running. As such, only by altering the games artwork files in a manner similar to the various skin changes (clothing optional being the use that most quickly leaps to mind) can you change this screen.

I have seen these artwork patches change that screen - mostly just tagging it to indicate which patches have been loaded, and they certainly change the load screens as you change from one major landmass to another, outlands, northrend etc. As this is also an animated screen I'd guess it would be more difficult to modify, but someone could likely replace the file completely by name in one of the patch files and give you something different.

So I guess the short answer is: 'Yes, but it's likely more effort than it's worth unless you already know how to build your own art patch files.

Not quite /any/ client side modifications, but certainly modifications of the sort neccesary to make these sorts of changes to the login screen, yes. – Feist Oct 30 at 22:05

Ive used in the past a addon of sorts that by copying some folders in the wtf root folder would change your logon screen for old ones like dreanai, bloodelfs and such but with the new patch it didnt work anymore and i dnt really know if theres a update to it...

I don't like that login screen tbh. Its too resource intensive, and sure its different to just seeing the Dark Portal but Sindragosa does get on your nerves. – Clbull Oct 30 at 22:19

Just saw WoW Login Screen Tweaker linked elsewhere, and remembered this old question.

WoW Login Screen Tweaker v3.0

Works for any WoTLK client version now!

Introduction:

Patch 3.2.x blocked old way of changing/removing login screen background.

So i did some research and made it work again (this tool should work for all WoTLK versions = 3.0.1 -> 3.x.x). To make it easier for everyone i made small java application which can change your login screen automatically. All you need to do is run application + select login screen background/music and hit Apply button.

Functions:

  • Autodetects your wow install path but allows you to select it manually (if not correctly installed,...).
  • Can disable/change login screen animation (background).
  • Preview for custom backgrounds.
  • Can change/remove you login screen music. -You can browse your computer and select your own MP3. -You can change everything back to original (just select original background and sound)
  • Forgot to mention that you will never hear that "roar" again with custom background.

Be warned, THIS DOES MESS WITH SEVERAL GAME FILES, AND MAY RESULT IN ACTION AGAINST YOUR ACCOUNT - though unlikely, it is indeed possible, so use at your own risk.
