How do you interpret World of Logs data?

My 25man raid has started posting data to World of Logs so that we can see endless wipes on Marrowgar in glorious detail.

I'm pretty interested in this for two reasons:

  • I want to use the data to try and find ways of boosting my personal performance (disc priest).

  • I want to try and work out where the raid in general is failing when we wipe.

Can anyone suggest a methodical approach to pulling useful information out of this mass of statistics? What should I be looking for in each of the two cases above and how do I access this data via the World of Logs interface?

I have been using recount for this kind of analysis, and am familiar with general concepts of measuring raid performance, but am unfamiliar with what extended capabilities WOL can provide, and how to access them.

I'd prefer a generally applicable set of instructions rather than an unpicking of a particular raid, though I understand that the latter can help illustrate the former. If it would be useful, I can edit to post a link to our last raid here.

General Analysis of World of Logs

Deaths

What is killing your raid team will tell you who is consistently dying to preventable damage and who is dying because the raid is falling apart (enrage timer, healers/tanks dead, etc.)

Overall Fight DPS

There is an ebb and flow of dps for every encounter. You can use WoL to see when you're dps is pushing the hardest during the encounter.

Tanks

In general, when viewing tanks for information, you want to see damage done, avoidance and dps(threat).

DPS

Numbers should be in line with other dps. If you think your entire team is behind for an encounter, you can always review other raid's data on WoL. Pinpoint those who seem low. Analyze their rotation vs. their actual output.

Healers

Is their HPS high enough? For classes with preventative damage (disc priests/paladins) you can view an estimate of healing equivalency that their bubbles provided -- if this is not in line with expected HPS, then this needs to be examined in more detail. Who did they heal? Analyze their spell use vs. their raid assignment.

Note

To get the most out of WoL for every individual, it helps to know their spec/glyphs/assignment. With this information you can delve a bit deeper and analyze rotations and spell usage which is the crux of improving for most players.

Finding the Data

To find reports concerning the entire raid, use the Dashboard drop-down menu. You can pull up reports for dps, healing, damage done, damage taken, and deaths.

To find reports on individual players, go to the third menu, Players, and select a player's name. This will bring up an individual meter of the player's performance.

  • Damage by Spell lists all damaging abilities utilized by the player as well as all damage the player took from all sources (avoidance information can be found here).
  • Healing by Spell lists all healing spells the player cast as well as all healing the player received from any source.
  • Damage by Actor lists who the target damaged during the fight as well as source of damage to himself.
  • Healing by actor lists who the player healed as well as who healed that player.
  • Buffs gained, Buffs cast, and Death are all fairly explanatory but can be found in this area as well.

Thanks for the answer - I already do pretty much all of this in Recount, but am struggling with finding equivalent data in WOL (e.g. tank avoidance, which you mention). Having reread my question I see I need to phrase it better, as I'm not after measuring raid performance in general, so much as specifics on how to dig out good raid performance metrics from an unfamiliar interface. – Runc (Jan 21 2010 5:32 AM)

A nice guide on how to use WoL. Just thought I'd put it out there.
