Is peer to peer "better" than direct when dealing with the WoW downloader

Personally I have always found that turning off peer to peer increases my download speed.

however is this really the 'best' way of downloading a patch (as blizzard would seem to suggest by enabling it as default and green lighting p2p whereas yellow lighting direct)?

as I have suggested in my area at least it seems like using the direct download function is often faster (114KB/s on direct to ~56KB/s with around 40 peers on p2p). However is there anything to be said for the peer to peer option that blizz gives us?

The use of peer-to-peer will also depend greatly on your ISP's traffic shaping scheme.
Blizzard uses bittorrent for its p2p, and uses the default ports at that. Due to the way bittorent is used quite frequently for piracy, there are ISPs that will reduce the ability to download over these ports.
Another issue is that it uses multiple connections to download the files, and many modems/routers can't effectively handle the number that bittorrent works best under. From what I remember, Windows XP also had this issue unless certain settings were changed.

+1 - Although nowadays, most modems/routers can easily handle the traffic/connections bittorent creates. Of course, if your using an old Linksys WRT54 or something, you might have some problems :) – ♦♦gnarf (Feb 3 2010 2:57 PM)

Blizzard prefers you to use P2P because it lightens the load on their own servers, by having users share in the uploading burden. So it depends what you mean by "best".

I think that is what I meant by 'best'! however does it benefit me at all? (i.e. does it speed up servers, mean blizz can spend more time on nurfing rogues, save the planet from death by baboons?) – Phood (Feb 3 2010 2:20 PM)

If turning off P2P increases your download speed, it benefits you most to leave it off. Leaving P2P on will save Blizzard a little bit of bandwidth/server costs, but I don't think they're hurting for money, and it's not like they're about to decrease your subscription price. – eliah (Feb 3 2010 2:41 PM)

If your ISP is not throttling you, and your router/computer can handle the number of connections, P2P will speed up your download as you can easily max out your bandwidth with P2P while you are unlikely to do that with the direct HTTP download. – Eridius (Feb 4 2010 3:54 PM)

Everything said so far is accurate, I'd add the following however:

P2P: Works best when there is a lot of users downloading (and by extension, sharing) the file.

Direct: Works better when there are few people downloading the file.

Due to the architecture of the system used, the more people using the P2P download the faster you'll be able to download it yourself. The opposite is true for the direct download. Blizzard server only have a set capacity to share the files.

Therefore, when a new patch is release there will be a lot of people downloading the file at the same time and therefore assuming your ISP/router have no problem with a P2P system your download speed will probably be better than by using the direct download option. After a while, when you reinstall the game for example, much less people will be sharing the file and as such it will probably be faster to use the direct download option.
