As we've seen in CoT:Black Moras, the blasted lands used to be a swamp just like Swamp of Sorrows, and was mostly flat in the area surrounding the gate when Midivh creates the portal.

So why is it that in Blasted Lands, the portal sits at the bottom of a massive detonation crater?

Essentially, shortly after Medivh opened the Dark Portal, at the end of the Black Morass instance, the orcs moved into Azeroth, and established their home there, around the Dark Portal, ravaging the land and causing it to resemble their homeland, in the Hellfire Peninsula, on the other side of the portal.

At the end of the events of Warcraft 2's main campaign, the mage Khadgar annihilates the Portal utterly, although it was already located inside a crater. Likely, the magical discharge caused the after-effects we see, today. Also, as per the WC2 expansion, the Portal was not completely destroyed; other heroes, many of whom are seen in Outland, including Danath Trollbane, Alleria, and, of course, Khadgar, journeyed to the other side, to destroy the Portal from that side, an event which fractured the planet of Draenor, turning it into the floating series of islands we see today, in Outland.

I do not believe there is any official lore for this but it was mentioned in one of the novels that the land between Draenor and Azeroth were merging, thus turning the swamp into the red barren area like Hellfire, which has quite a few large crevices and due to the proximity the area around the portal could possibly be the most affected region and thus a large crater. Another possibility is in the cinematic in Warcraft 2 it is in a large crater but that is the first spot that it appeared so, where Khadgar blasted the area to disable the portal. Another idea could possibly be the large amounts of lightning zapping the area in the smaller craters, which could indicate that a large bolt hit where the portal is and blasted chunks everywhere.

All three of these are just theories of mine but I personally believe it is the land merging. Feel free to scour the WoWWiki page for anything but I didn't find anything.
