So I rolled a rogue and I've got him up to level 20. I am really enjoying this class, but I know there's quite a bit to playing the class effectively. Basically what I'm looking for is what kind of daggers to equip in MH and OH (really want to stick with daggers, don't want to go swords or maces at this point), what talent tree I should focus on for leveling, and what glyphs are best for leveling.

I ask specifically for leveling because while there is a wealth of information out there, 95% of it is for level 80 toons and end game. It's very hard to find info on specs/builds/glyphs/advice in general for lower level toons.

Unfortunately, my guild only has one rogue (part of the reason I rolled one), and he's rarely on, so I don't have that as an option. Thanks, guys.

Just a random tip: get the Glyph of Blurred Speed, as leveling in outland is much easier if you can mount your flying mount on water! – Gorfmasta Mar 21 at 19:35

I can elaborate on this later (at work now), but the basic answers to your questions are:

  • If you want to use daggers, spec Mutilate (focus on the Assassination tree). Combat is best suited to swords/fists/maces, and Subtlety is not as strong for leveling as either of the other two trees, IMO.
  • Especially for leveling, the DPS of your daggers is their most important factor, but for Mut in general it's best to have one fast and one slow dagger, if you have several daggers of similar DPS. Put the highest DPS dagger in your main hand; if you have two daggers of the same DPS but different speed, put the faster one in your main hand.
  • Glyphs I don't really know off the top of my head. I'll come back later and fill in more info on that.

As Jaedia hinted towards, (imo) Assassination isnt quite as good until your able to pick up Mutilate (which is a tier-7 talent). I personally leveled from 1-80 as Subtlety, so these "advice/tips" (since this is all the OP is asking for) may be biased.

If your curious about "leveling" Subtlety i'd look into this spec WowHead:Subtlety

The B.e.a.utiful thing about subtlety is that it IS the stealthy spec. By this I mean you will eventually have Master of Subtlety, Camouflage, and best of all Master of Deception which will eliminate the frustration of the mobs breaking you out of stealth before you can pull off your big opener. And those are the least exciting of the Subtlety talents by far.

Also another great thing about this specc for you is that Subtlety Daggers got a decent boost from the last patch and should be able to deal comparible burst damage next to assassination for your level.

As far as glyphs go an almost mandatory glyph for Subt would be The glyph of Hemorrhage. aside from that you have few choices for your other options in the form of Glyph of Eviscerate and glyph of either Slice and Dice (SnD) or Rupture...pickings are slim. and for the minors i would pick up Blurred speed (as mentioned earlier) Glyph o Vanish and Safe fall...not much better than those unfortunatly.

To what eliah said (about two equal DPS daggers and doing F/S - read Fast/Slow):

I have an alt rogue in fairly decent gear (~5500gs) and I have tested that extensively. It looks good on spreadsheets, but the hours I spent testing it over and over again (mostly due to boredom :P) it never... let me repeat that... it NEVER did better DPS than S/F and in fact, was at least 150-200dps below S/F.

Raid Buffs make a big difference here. – Feist Apr 3 at 15:41
This shouldn't even be an answer, as it does not answer the question asked, only disagrees with another answer. Also, your basis for this "answer" is personal experience on a geared level 80 rogue, when the question specifically mentions that the information desired should relate to a rogue which has not yet reached level 80. – Darae Apr 3 at 17:48
Agreed, Darae. While the information was useful (as I'm always keeping end-game in mind), it lent nothing useful for a starting rogue. – InternetH3ro Apr 4 at 0:12

Since the recent patch, Subtlety has become a viable spec for leveling. If you specifically want to level with daggers, you could try Subtlety until you get to 50 (which is the level you can grab Mutilate) which is when, in my opinion at least, Assassination becomes more fun. It's much more burst damage.

If you have access to heirlooms, I would suggest going combat for the cooldowns (I liked the dal'rend/thrash blade combo). It makes killing some of the 2 (and even 3) person elite mobs easier!
