Does Hammer of the Righteous cause more threat than Crusader Strike?

I've been running heroics since patch 4.0, and i've noticed that both crusader strike and hammer of the righteous do the same damage (single target). I haven't had any threat issues using one specifically ( i tried only using one on bosses and only using the other), but it seems interesting that both can work. does crusader strike scale better? which generates more threat?

I don't know that "more threat" is the right phrase to use. Because of the mechanic changes with the patch, Crusader Strike and Hammer of the Righteous are for two different situations. Hammer of the Righteous has no use in single target fights. You should only be using it on multiple target fights. For single target fights, you'll use Crusader Strike as your primary threat builder.

The technical answer to your question is that Crusader Strike provides more threat per target than Hammer of the Righteous, but when you are tanking multiple mobs, Hammer of Righteous provides more threat spread across the enemies.

It should also be pointed out, since it took me a while to realize this, `Crusader Strike` and `Hammer of the Righteous` share, and have the same, cooldown. So you are truely can only use one or the other (i.e. *the last remmants of the old 6-9-6-9 have been swept away) – Pauladin (Oct 16 2010 12:10 PM)

Hammer of the Righteous has been nerfed to deal significantly less damage from a single target point of view, but have an AoE attack.

However, it is worth noting that:

  • Both are on the same cooldown length, 4.5 seconds.
  • Both share cooldowns, so that using one places them both on cooldown.
  • Crusader Strike is meant to be used in a single target rotation.
  • Hammer of the Righteous is meant to be used in a multiple target rotation.

The cooldown on both is 3s, not 4.5s. – Christopher Schmidt (Oct 18 2010 6:21 AM)

I've figured, that id Righteous Fury still only boosts Holy damage threat, than it must be higher as HOTR hits for only a small bit of holy – Gorfmasta (Nov 21 2010 4:59 PM)
