What sold and what didn't at Cata release?

I'm very curious as to what sold well and what didn't at the release of Cataclysm, when everyone was busy leveling up their characters (and creating new ones). I came up with several ideas on my blog over at WowSource.US (which is no more, maybe one day I'll be inspired to start back up).

One such idea was that everyone will be in to buying a ton of raw materials, and the counter idea was that everyone would flood the AH with them. Another idea was that 16/18 slot bags (crafted) would sell for ungodly amounts, but then championing for major cities allowed for cheap 16 slot bags.

Did you invest in any items before Cataclysm's release in the hopes of becomining the next WoW gold-capper? If so, what did you invest in? How did it work out for you?

NOTE: This is a very general question that does not request a specific answer, but rather a broad overview of the changes in WoW economics as impacted by the expansion.

Some items that have qualities of limited supply and high demand, being valued extremely high as a result are rare minerals such as Silver Ore, Khorium Ore, and Titanium Ore.

I decided to wait until I could fly before leveling herbalism. Prior to cata, some herbs were almost vendor-trash. Post Cataclysm I was getting from 20g a stack for early vanilla herbs up to 100g stacks for Northrend herbs.
I think it makes sense in that there was an immediate large demand for L1 to 450 materials to powerlevel professions, but the supply was medium at low levels and non-existant higher up.

I invested in Argent Tournament pets. It was a very bad choice. I have 40+ various pets in my bank purchased for <400g each. I have sold one for 2500g. There is demand is minimal and their are too many people watching the market listing their spare pets. I won't fire-sale them because I think their rarity will increase over time and I don't need the gold or bank space.

The fact that inscription people can blow up the herbs to make new Darkmoon Cards might help too: http://www.wowhead.com/item=61987 – ♦♦gnarf (Dec 21 2010 4:06 AM)

Yes, this is completely what I was thinking too. I was in the process of leveling a druid but I couldn't get to 80 as fast as I needed -- I wanted to max herb w/ Tauren +15 herb and cultivation (quicker gathering) + flight form to really grab all the Cata herbs as fast as the speed of light because I'm sure they sold for a TON. – Confidence (Dec 21 2010 10:58 AM)
