Frost Mage Crit Soft-cap (in raid)?

VOTES

What's the current soft-cap for frost mages regarding crit in a raid environment with most usual raid buffs?

I know the simple answer is 33.3%, but i'm wondering how to get there, and which buffs interact and thus gets trippled by the Shatter Talent. And which ones doesn't?

Critical Mass / Improved Shadowbolt for instance. Is that trippled by Shatter? Also, i read somewhere that bosses has a built in -5% crit chance. Is that still the case? If so, how will this affect Shatter?

So assume all available raid buffs and debuffs. How much critrate would a mage need, self buffed, to enter a raid group and get, with the raid buffs, 100% critrate while shatter is active?

I'm sorry for the clumsy way of asking this question, but i hope for some sensible answers. Don't be afraid if your reply might not be what i'm looking for. Just shoot!

I've never gotten to grips with mage crits so here is my non-answer, a quote the elitistjerks about the 2P T11 bonus. "There is the very minor concern that a +5% bonus on crit could push Ice Lance crits above 33.33%, which would be wasted. Given crit levels initially at level 85, this is unlikely to be a problem. – Dobablo (Dec 22 2010 6:57 AM)

First of all, we'll work out the percentage that we need from gear, and then convert that to rating.

The hard cap for crit; that is, the amount required to land a guaranteed crit without Shatter, is 100%. The Critical Mass debuff reduces this to 95% (so in answer to your question, no, it doesn't stack with Shatter). The "soft" cap; that is, the cap with Shatter, is a third of the hard cap, or 95/3 = 31.7%

You get 3% crit from talents, so we're down to 28.7%.

Now, buffs. You won't be usiAng Molten Armour, but there are other crit buffs. These can be obtained from a Feral Druid, Hunter Pet, Subtlety Rogue, Elemental Shaman or Fury Warrior. Hopefully you'll have one of those. This is a 5% buff, meaning that we're now down to 23.7%.

Finally, there is Focus Magic. This gives you a 3% crit buff if you're lucky enough to get it, which brings us down to 20.7%

The crit rating conversion at 85 is 179.28 rating for 1%. Therefore to hit the 20.7% "soft" cap you will need 3705.12 (rounded to 3706) rating. How this is spit up between gear, gems, enchants and buff food is up to you.

I may have missed something - if I have, let me know. Otherwise, hope that helped.

P.S With regard to the 5% boss crit reduction, I have never heard of that myself. If someone can prove it to be true then please let me know.

Thank you for your answer. I think i see now how it's likely to work. It would seem i'm a bit over the critcap, so it's time to reglyph (i actually DO use molten armor, with glyph, but then again i don't get Focus Magic usually). In regards to the boss crit reduction, i have found this while looking for frost dk info on EJ (elitist jerks): http://elitistjerks.com/f72/t105701-frost_dps_cataclysm_larger_than_life/#Basic_Combat_Mechanics It states: All spell attacks have a 3% crit suppression vs bosses. So it would seem, if EJ are correct (and they often are), that the number is 3%, not 5%. – Floppydog (Jan 25 2011 5:53 AM)
