Is it ok? yes. it's it recommend? no. You have talents and your special form to help fill gaps.

I don't know how I slipped into spriest based-answers.

the stat weighting is currently at

Int: 1.0000

SP: 0.7935

Haste: 0.5031

Crit: 0.4040

Mastery: 0.3857

Hit: 0.3741

Spirit: 0.3732

per elitistjerks.com

can you personally find it useful for quest grinding or soloing? perhaps. but for grouping/dungeons/raids... not a good stat

That is the EJ stat weighting for a shadow priest. You can't apply weightings so easily for healers because they do not focus on sustained single target throughput. – Dobablo (Jan 24 2011 1:42 AM)

Dobablo is absolutely correct that you shouldn't apply the stats weightings for one spec to another spec, as you will generally lose efficiency. I would take it a step further, and say that you shouldn't blindly follow the stat weightings for ANY class/spec that are posted online, because stat weights vary greatly depending on your actual spec, and what gear you currently have. – Spazmoosifer (Jan 24 2011 8:27 AM)

Please don't just quote stat weights without understanding how they work and are created, especially with healing. The guide you link to even says "When we first reach level 85, spirit is king. As you progress through normal dungeons and then heroics, you will start to feel more comfortable with your regen and it will be time to take more serious look at your other stats." – Slowcat (Feb 23 2011 1:59 PM)

just before that it talks about "Get as much Intellect as you can through higher item level gear.". EJ is not a guide for leveling, no, but it's a good guide to extrapolate what the balance of affairs, stats and talents that can make you better at your job is. The information I provided is valuable if taken in context, which I provided. One thing the devs made clear is that with the cata expansion they wanted to make sure that a primary state was ALWAYS a clear upgrade path. so the first thing for a priest of any spec is intellect which my post shows – Maslow (Mar 20 2011 8:28 AM)

Spirit gems are acceptable for mana issues but not Sparkling Sky Sapphire. Use the new cataclysm gems such as Sparkling Ocean Sapphire or one of the split items if matching colour requirements.

Alternatively look for different methods that cut down your mana consumption (casting correct heals, people avoiding damage). Regen is useful and being mana constrained is an important aspect of play but you spirit stacking is not essential. Make sure you are using your shadowfiend and prayer as often as they are up and if no one is in immediate danger of death focus on efficient heals instead of quick or large ones.

If I recall correctly (and I may not since I have not consistently healed since WotLK) you may actually be better off using Intellect gems over the Spirit gems, because, while you may not have as much "regen-per-second", you end up regenerating more simply because you have a higher mana pool...or something like that. – Spazmoosifer (Jan 24 2011 8:32 AM)

Spirit Regen = Sqrt(Intellect) * Spirit *.016725 so if you are low on regen (like most new L85s are), spirit is king. In terms of priority, grab the highest ilvl you can for int as long as it also has spirit, then gem/reforge to spirit until comfortable. – Dobablo (Jan 25 2011 1:31 AM)

Stacking Spirit isn't the best choice. It is better to try to match socket bonuses using hybrid gems such as Purified Demonseye or Zen Dream Emerald.

Mana is much tighter than it has been in the past, but you will see a greater return from play style changes than how you gem.

The number one thing is to NOT top people off. It is ok to keep DPS around 60% and the Tank around 80%. This will decrease overhealing and increase mana longevity a lot.

Use Heal, even when you want to use something else. Greater Heal will bring people back up quicker, but try to reserve it for the Tank as much as possible. Even on the Tank try to rotate Heal & Greater Heal. In most cases it is enough to keep people alive and stable without burning mana.

Renew is great after the last mana cost reduction. Using Renew instead of Healon DPS will allow quicker return to healing the Tank. That can be the difference between needing to use Greater Heal or having time to cast two regular Heal spells.

Try to use Circle of Healing or Prayer of Healing only during AoE phases. Using Heal 2-3 times will be more efficient most other times. Also try to always have Prayer of Mending bouncing around.

Also use Shadowfiend once you hit about 50% mana, earlier if you expect it to be a long fight. Use Hymn of Hope if you get lower on mana and have the tank / group stabilized.
