All of my toons when I log on or read the mail, are looking at a scroll. When looked at closely, it looks like a map. Does anyone know what the purpose is of that scroll?

This is a new animation that was added with patch 4.2, and it is indeed a map that your character is looking at. It really serves no major purpose in the game other than to show other players that you are looking at your map (because in most cases you won't be the one that sees that animation).
